A lot of the problems you describe relate to it sitting around for years not being run. The battery probably was dead, and they started it before you came so you didn't see all the smoke that poured out when it first started up, and also so the idle smoothed out, etc. For some reason, it seems like when a car sits a long time without being used, all the rubber and seals dry up. It might go away after a little while of use, it might not.
